Ben Mzondo, Business Development Director at ADComms, introduces Monica Hub — a smart data aggregation and connectivity platform designed to support the UK rail industry’s digital transformation.

As connected train technology becomes a reality through initiatives like Network Rail’s Project Reach, the need for reliable data access and communication is more critical than ever. However, patchy mobile coverage along rail corridors has long hindered real-time data transmission. Monica Hub addresses this challenge by collecting on-train data and making it available as soon as connectivity is restored—typically when a train reaches a station or urban area.

The platform enables near real-time access to vital information such as CCTV footage, passenger counts, and system diagnostics. For example, in the event of an onboard incident, operators can quickly retrieve evidentiary-grade CCTV footage via a secure cloud portal, allowing them to respond rapidly and even communicate with passengers in need. This capability also extends to stakeholders like British Transport Police, who can access the data securely and efficiently.

Beyond safety, Monica Hub enhances operational efficiency. It supports predictive maintenance by identifying anomalies in train systems and helps operators respond to spikes in passenger numbers by alerting cleaning or station staff. The system is data-agnostic and integrates seamlessly with existing infrastructure, requiring no major hardware replacements.

Already in use by Transport for London and Merseyrail, Monica Hub is proving essential in delivering safer, smarter, and more responsive rail services. As the industry continues to digitise, platforms like Monica Hub will be key to unlocking the full potential of connected rail.
