PROJECT OVERVIEW

As part of the Deep Tube Upgrade Programme (DTUP), ADComms was awarded a five-year NEC3 Option D Target Cost contract by London Underground to deliver a next-generation One-Person Operation (OPO) CCTV system. This digital solution supports the introduction of 94 new ‘Inspiro’ trains on the Piccadilly Line and is designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and operational control across the network.

The project is being delivered under the Major Projects Directorate and includes a 12-year maintenance commitment following installation.

CHALLENGES

CHALLENGES

London Underground required a modernised CCTV system to enable safe, driver-only train dispatch across 55 stations. The system needed to meet stringent technical requirements, including:

  • bullet

Glass-to-glass latency of no more than 200 milliseconds

  • bullet

Real-time PTI (Platform Train Interface) visibility

  • bullet

Compatibility with terminal stations and all train movements

  • bullet

Integration with Leaky Feeder RF technology

  • bullet

Integration with the train operating system for location awareness and fault and diagnostic indications.

The solution had to be delivered in a live operational environment, with minimal disruption and maximum safety assurance.

SCOPE OF WORKS

ADComms is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of the OPO CCTV system, including:

  • bullet

Design, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of the platform-to-train CCTV system

  • bullet

Design, manufacture, and testing of train-borne equipment

  • bullet

Installation of Off-Train Communication (OTC) infrastructure & RX Bases

  • bullet

Supply and installation of platform stopping marker fixings

  • bullet

    12-year system maintenance post-installation

The system architecture includes digital IP cameras positioned along each platform, transmitting real-time images to the driver’s cab via a bespoke encoder, Leaky Feeder antennae, and on-board decoders.

SCOPE OF WORKS

TECHNICAL INNOVATION

To reduce site visits and improve design accuracy, ADComms developed a digital PTI representation by combining platform point cloud scans with a CAD model of the new Inspiro trains.

This innovation enabled precise camera alignment, eliminated the need for physical jigs, and supported pre-compliance assurance — helping ensure safe train departure and full driver visibility across all driving modes.

OUTCOME

This active project is already demonstrating the value of digital innovation in rail safety.

By combining advanced technology with collaborative delivery, ADComms is helping London Underground set a new standard for driver-only operation on deep tube lines.

The Delivery Strategy has been really impressively developed and led by Andrew Jones and the digital system team.
