Client | AtkinsRealis
Sector | Rail Telecoms Infrastructure
Location | Surrey, UK
As part of Network Rail’s safety upgrade programme, AtkinsRéalis was contracted to deliver GRIP 4–8 stages for the enhancement of signalling and level crossing assets across four key sites on the North Downs Line. To support this, ADComms was engaged to install, test, and commission critical FTNx telecoms infrastructure—enabling robust connectivity for signalling systems and improving operational safety.
This project builds on the trusted partnership between ADComms and AtkinsRéalis, previously established through successful collaboration on the East West Rail (EWR) programme.

Commissioning completed on schedule, with no delays caused by ADComms

FTNx assets integrated into the live NWR network, enabling reliable signalling connectivity

Client satisfaction, with AtkinsRéalis indicating interest in future collaboration

Budget and resource alignment, maintaining expected project margins

Engineer development, strengthening future delivery capability

Test equipment validated, refreshing internal circuit testing expertise

Reputation reinforced, positioning ADComms for future FTNx and signalling projects
ADComms was responsible for the full delivery of FTNx infrastructure, including:

Site surveys across all locations

Installation of free-issue FTNx equipment within existing Network Rail REBs

Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) of installed assets

Commissioning and integration onto the live NWR network

Circuit provision testing post-NRT build

Submission of Health & Safety documentation, including test reports and certificates

Production of Task Briefing Sheets and Planned Works documentation (Standard, At-Risk, Disconnection)

Rapid mobilisation following bid acceptance, requiring swift production of Work Package Plans and deployment to the site.

Procurement delays in receiving free-issue equipment, while the fixed handover deadline remained unchanged.

Circuit testing issues, with some failures due to Network Rail Telecoms (NRT) design queries—resolved through Change Requests and return visits.

Disconnection works, requiring coordination with AtkinsRéalis to arrange Level Crossing Attendants for safe operations.

Live infrastructure environment, demanding precision and safety across REBs and signalling rooms.
The FTNx upgrade was delivered on time, within budget, and to the high standards expected by both AtkinsRéalis and Network Rail.
Despite early procurement delays and a compressed delivery window, ADComms’ agile project management and experienced engineering team ensured that all milestones were met without compromising safety or quality.
