Client | East West Rail Alliance (EWRA
Sector | Rail Telecoms Infrastructure
Location | Multiple Node Sites across East West Rail Phase 2
As part of the ongoing East West Rail Phase 2 programme, ADComms was appointed to deliver a series of FTNx and GSM-R node uplifts to enhance telecoms infrastructure and operational readiness across key locations.
The project supports the strategic goal of improving connectivity and resilience for future signalling and communications systems.

Compressed Delivery Timeline
The project required a rapid transition from bid acceptance to site deployment. Despite delays in receiving free-issue equipment due to procurement issues, ADComms adapted quickly to maintain the fixed commissioning deadline before Christmas.

Circuit Testing Issues
Some circuits failed initial testing due to Network Rail Telecoms (NRT) design queries. ADComms resolved these by submitting Change Requests and returning to site to complete testing within the planned window.

Operational Coordination
Disconnection works required coordination with AtkinsRéalis to arrange Level Crossing Attendants, ensuring safety and compliance during critical phases.
ADComms’ scope included:

Installation and configuration of BTS-R equipment at designated node sites

Remote and on-site configuration of FTNx transmission systems

GSM-R system testing and validation

Interface planning and staged commissioning

Submission of Entry Into Service documentation and assurance records
All activities were delivered in collaboration with EWRA, Network Rail Telecoms, and other delivery partners, ensuring seamless integration and compliance.
Testing & Commissioning

System testing and commissioning: Green Park, Bounds Green, Holloway Road, Leicester Square
Enabling Works

OPO CCTV commissioned across six stations to support 24TS system integration testing between Northfields and Hammersmith
The programme was delivered through a highly coordinated approach involving interface planning with multiple stakeholders, remote configuration management to minimise site visits, and service testing aligned with Network Rail governance.
Staged commissioning supported future signalling capabilities. ADComms worked closely with EWRA and Network Rail to ensure all milestones were achieved and the system was accepted into operational service without disruption.
ADComms successfully completed the installation and configuration of BTS-R and FTNx assets.
The FTNx uplifts were delivered on time and within budget, with all systems fully tested and commissioned. Key outcomes included full GSM-R system testing and validation, submission and approval of Entry Into Service documentation, and seamless integration into the wider East West Rail telecoms programme.
This project reinforces ADComms’ capability in delivering complex telecoms upgrades in live rail environments, supporting the future of digital rail infrastructure.
