Sector | Rail Telecoms Infrastructure

Location | London, UK

OVERVIEW

As part of East West Rail Phase 2, ADComms was engaged by the East West Rail Alliance (EWRA) to enhance fibre resilience at Marylebone Station.

This initiative was critical to ensuring compliance with Network Rail’s telecoms standards (NR/L2/TEL/30160) and to future-proofing the station’s fibre infrastructure.

The project followed ADComms’ successful delivery of FTNx and GSM-R systems for the same programme, reinforcing our role as a trusted delivery partner in complex rail telecoms environments.

SCOPE OF WORKS

SCOPE OF WORKS

ADComms was responsible for the installation, testing, and commissioning of a new 24-core FTN fibre route between key telecoms nodes.

Our scope included:

  • bullet

    Fibre jointing and splicing

  • bullet

    Cable containment and routing

  • bullet

    Confirmatory testing (ILM/OTDR)

  • bullet

Safe removal of legacy fibre routes

  • bullet

Coordination with Network Rail and specialist subcontractors

  • bullet

Deployment of safety-critical staff and logistics management

CHALLENGES

Marylebone Station, a busy London terminus, presented a unique set of challenges:

  • bullet

Live operational environment with limited access windows

  • bullet

    Legacy infrastructure requiring careful decommissioning

  • bullet

Strict compliance with national fibre diversity standards

The goal was to implement a new, resilient fibre route that would ensure diverse routing of FTN core fibres - minimising the risk of service disruption and aligning with modern telecoms resilience requirements.

CHALLENGES

KEY EXPERTISE

The project was successfully delivered by a multidisciplinary team of certified professionals, including construction managers, engineers, fibre specialists, and electricians — all working together to ensure safe and efficient delivery.

Collaboration with trusted subcontractors and Network Rail’s FTN Technical Support enabled a controlled and incident-free fibre cutover at Camden Substation.

OUTCOME

Despite the complexity of the site and the constraints of working in a live station environment, the project was successfully delivered with zero impact on the wider programme and the fibre rerouting was completed safely, on time, and to a high technical standard.

The new fibre route now provides robust, compliant, and future-ready telecoms infrastructure for Marylebone Station.

ADComms’ professionalism, flexibility, and problem-solving capabilities were key to the project’s success. Their ability to integrate with our delivery model has laid strong foundations for future collaboration.
